Dave Palmer and His Only Friends Free Concert:
Many folks came out on this beautiful July evening to take in the stories and music of local Grand Haven favorite band: Dave Palmer and His Only Friends!
The new playground at the North end of the Park is complete!
Volunteers Paint the Storage Shed:
In early June, Friends of Grand Haven State Park board members Mike Mazurek and Dan Ruiter assisted summer DNR park ranger Jamie Stockton in repainting the campground storage shed. The shed is used jointly by state park staff to keep landscaping and other supplies and by the Friends group to store the firewood sold to campers as a fundraiser for the new playground and other Friends projects. The Friends group purchased the paint for the task and the volunteers and park staff worked together to get the job done. At face value, the shed painting is simply a mundane endeavor, but it also is a good example of the cooperation between state park staff and Friends volunteers in accomplishing efforts necessary to maintain and enhance the Grand Haven State Park.
New playground equipment and bike racks installed at Grand Haven State Park!
Two new pieces of playground equipment have been installed in the campground for children to enjoy thanks to the combined efforts of the Friends of Grand Haven State Park, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Grand Haven State Park. An expanded playground is coming soon!
The Friends of Grand Haven State Park, using funds raised by the Sand Volleyball Tournament, were also able to acquire 3 new bike racks for the Park. One has been installed near the day use playground and volleyball courts. The other two will be installed near the Pavilion in 2017.
Disability-accessible walkways installed at Grand Haven State Park!
Access to the beach at the Grand Haven State Park recently became a reality for persons with mobility challenges with the installation of two American with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant walkways! Thanks to a joint effort of the Friends of Grand Haven State Park, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Grand Haven State Park, wheel chair, walker and cane users are now able to visit close the water’s edge. One 180-foot solid-surface walk was placed at the pavilion/day-use area of the park and a second, 190-foot walk was set between lots 145/147 in the camp ground. Each walkway includes a resting area at the mid-point and viewing deck at the end.
The Friends of Grand Haven State Park (FGHSP) contributed fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) for the project. The funds were raised through a variety of activities. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) provided an additional $15,000 through its Partnership Match Program. The supervisor and staff of the State Park handled the installation of the ADA- approved structures. Mike Mazurek, president, FGHSP, stated, “The Friends of Grand Haven State Park gladly led this project. Grand Haven State Park is a treasure for residents and visitors alike, and all should have easy access to the waterfront. We are pleased to partner with the State Park and the DNR in this effort.”
Two New drinking fountains installed at Grand Haven State Park!
Thirsty beach goers, volleyball and soccer players, kite flyers and other State Park visitors now have easy access to cool drinking water thanks to the installation of the new water fountain located just south of the pavilion. The acquisition of the drinking fountain is the inaugural project of the Friends of Grand Haven State Park.
The dollars raised, $7,800, served as the base to successfully apply to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for a matching grant for two drinking fountains. Volunteers from FGHSP and State Park personnel worked together to install the new fountains near the pavilion and next to the new park playground.
